The French Presence in Vancouver: Lectures & Conversations

Instructors: Gordon Price, John Gudmundson, Jean Barman, Maurice Guibord

French Connection Culture Association of B.C. in partnership with The City Program at Simon Fraser University will discuss and document the French cultural and historical presence in Vancouver, as well as explore the impact of the city on diverse communities. In six weekly lectures we will document and establish a legacy that celebrates the unique dynamic between Vancouver’s French heritage and the people that occupied it. The French Presence in Vancouver: Lectures & Conversations will be supplemented by weekend walking tours, local radio broadcasts and Internet podcasts throughout the year.
Your instructors will engage you in conversations in and around the French presence in Vancouver, concentrating on three periods: 1. French migration in the years surrounding Vancouver’s incorporation in 1886, 2. The “new wave” of French migration to the city during the Quebec diaspora of the 1960s and, 3. The French presence today and forwards.  This is consistent with the multiple ‘waves’ of immigration that have shaped and defined Vancouver ‘s identity over the past 125 years.
These lectures will appeal to participants interested in urban design, local heritage, diverse communities and French history.  A complementary local walking tour will be offered to interested participants on Saturday April 30th.  Full details available at the first lecture.
